James Francis Thorpe (Native Sauk-Fox name: Wa-Tho-Huk, which apparently means "Bright Path") was the first Native American to win a gold medal in the Olympics for the United States. He was also a very flexible athlete; not only doing the pentathlon and decathlon in the 1912 Olympics, he also played American football (collegiate and professional), professional baseball, and also basketball. The guy was unstoppable. Fascinating stuff. (Image based on a pre-1915 public domain image of him.)
