Open Clip Art Library 2.1 Announcement

Open Clip Art Library 2.1 Increases Functionality

Monday, April 26, 2010 - The Open Clip Art Librarians would like to announce the newest release of the Open Clip Art Library: Version 2.1 (http://www.openclipart.org). The latest iteration of the premier online vector graphics gallery now has a collection of greater than 30,000 unique and remixed images! This gigantic collection is evolving with the creation and distribution of a user community surpassing 62,000! The 2.1 release marks the beginning of the fulfillment of the librarians goal of releasing a major set of revisions to the Open Clip Art Library each month.

While last month's massive 2.0 release satisfied the needs of many users, there is still much more to accomplish. Bug reporting has been integral in the formulation of a plan of action for the Open Clip Art Librarians. Features that have risen to the top as most vital for the user experience have been given greater importance. Developers have pushed to add greater functionality to the already stellar offerings at openclipart.org. As of this 2.1 release, great new features are now a part of OCAL, including the ability to delete user-uploaded images (allowing for updates to existing work without duplicates), recovery options for lost or forgotten passwords, the ability to upload multiple files simultaneously, and support for additional archival formats! A major revision has come in the form of an "Upload Remix" button that now exists on the details page of every submitted clip art. This functionality creates an intuitive gateway for users to upload revisions and spin-offs of existing clip art!

There aren't enough positive things that can be said about the capabilities of the Aiki Framework, since it's inception as the back end of the Open Clip Art Library. As user interaction has shot through the roof and page visits have climbed into the tens of thousands on a daily basis, Aiki has continued to manage new and existing registrations efficiently, while delivering content at lightning speed. Members of San Francisco-based Fabricatorz have helped Bassel Safadi with the framework and making the Open Clip Art Library run so smoothly. Users who enjoy the experience and would like to make this solution work for them are encouraged to contact Fabricatorz at http://www.fabricatorz.com.

As always, this new release is the next step in an ongoing evolution. This progression can be impacted greatly by the OCAL community. The Librarians strongly urge anyone and everyone to continue filing bugs and requesting new features (https://bugs.launchpad.net/openclipart). Users of the Open Clip Art Library are also encouraged to communicate and interact through the mailing list, as well as logging in to IRC (#openclipart).

For more information on the specific development of the Open Clip Art Library, an often-updated project roadmap can be found at http://openclipart.org/wiki/roadmap. Any and all are encouraged to join the community of Librarians by assisting in the completion of tasks as they appear on the roadmap.
