Open Clip Art Library Release 0.16 Announcement
Aug 1, 2005 UTC — Release 0.16 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now available on-line for download as an individual package consisting of 4442 images submitted by over 443 artists from around the world.
This releases squishes a major bug that replaced valid keywords in the clip art files with some strange HASH memory location text. Most of the clip art in the library and this release is now repaired.
Bryce Harrington and Jon Phillips both presented at the 2005 Desktop Developers Conference in Ottawa. Harrington's presentation promoted Inkscape (www.inkscape.org) while Phillips' presentation introduced the Open Clip Art Library to the freedesktop community. Both presentations were well received and sparked several debates.
Also added this month is a new clipart-announce mailing list (http://freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/clipart-announce). The Open Clip Art Library encourages everyone to sign up for this list in order to ONLY receive messages about Open Clip Art Library release announcements. This list is especially well-suited for packagers and others that might not want to receive all the developer discussions from the primary project mailing list (http://freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/clipart).
As always, see what the librarians and artists are working on at http://planet.openclipart.org. Artist and librarians (developer) for the project who would like to be included in this blog should contact (http://openclipart.org/contact.php) the project admins in order to be added.
For the month of August the project invites submissions of clip art themed for the coming fall season.

Open Clip Art Library Release 0.15 Announcement
July 7, 2005 UTC — Release 0.15 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now on-line for download as an individual package consisting of 4336 images submitted by over 430 artists from around the world. The amount of high quality clip art has increased much with the inclusion of Nicu Buculei's Playing Cards collection and Gerald Ganson's package submission.
During the month of June, thanks to Google's Summer of Code, a student developer, Greg Steffensen, has received funding to construct a graphical client for the Open Clip Art Library. This client will be able to be used inside Inkscape and other applications on the free desktop. Also, this work is dependent upon the new document management system (DMS) and is planned to use its SOAP-based webservice API to communicate with the Open Clip Art Library.
In other news, developers Bryce Harrington and Jon Phillips are scheduled to present at Desktop Developers' Conference 2005 in Ottawa, Canada July 18-19. Harrington is presenting "Inkscape - An Open Source Vector Drawing Application" and Phillips is promoting "Introduction to the Open Clip Art Library," which will also be shown at SVG Open 2005 in Enschede, Netherlands.
For the month of July, the focus of the project will continue to be collecting summer themed clip art. However, in the background DMS will be further connected and tested with openclipart.org's internals.
The project encourages any interested person(s) to submit clip art and/or to lend a hand to make the Open Clip Art Library a more extensive resource of contributed clip art.

Open Clip Art Library Release 0.14 Announcement
June 10, 2005 UTC — Release 0.14 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now available for download on-line as an individual package consisting of 3415 images submitted by over 200 artists from around the globe.
The project has progressed much this month on the future core of the Open Clip Art Library, the Document Management System (DMS) and more infrastructure has been implemented for the website due to user-demand. In addition to the aggregration of developer blogs at Planet OpenClipArt (http://planet.openclipart.org/), the project is now using the freedesktop.org provided bugzilla bug tracker (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?product=openclipart.org) to focalize feature requests and bug reports related to clip art, dms, the website, and other concerns. And, in response to people having difficulty contacting developers, there is now a contact form on the main project page.
With regards to the Open Clip Art Library's growing release size, there is now an SVG-only package. And, for all those Windows users out there, the project is now providing a Windows installer that supports 40 languages and allows users to install and uninstall versions of the library package safely and securely.
Now is the time to contribute artwork to the library and help develop the infrastructure which allows for easy clip art distribution. All summer the project is looking for summer themed artwork. What a great time to get out of the heat and lend a hand to the ongoing development for the project. Or, go outside and get some inspiration for making some artwork for submission.

Open Clip Art Library Release 0.12 Announcement
April 1, 2005 UTC — Release 0.12 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now available for download on-line as an individual package consisting of over 3100 images submitted by over 200 artists from around the world. This release also helps us celebrate our first year as a project and provides foreshadowing as to what the rest of this year will bring.
Highlights from this release include:
* Several previous submissions have been re-converted from their original WMF format using Stephen Silver's new wmftosvg converter * Updated keyword search tool on the website * New imagery related to the March theme of "Spring"
During the month of March we received around 200 new images thanks to our many contributors. With everything from flowers to a much improved collection of vehicles, to more food imagery, the community is putting out another great Open Clip Art Library release. In April, we are encouraging people to submit imagery related to "Birthdays." Please share your vector graphics at the Open Clip Art Library.

Open Clip Art Library Release 0.11 Announcement
March 8, 2005 UTC — Release 0.11 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now available for download on-line as an individual package consisting of 2896 images submitted by over 200 artists from around the world. Some of the new clip art received this month includes more images of food, computer-related items and even a little boombox. In addition to the collected 0.11 package, each clip art file can now be found by keywords using developer Jonadab's new Keyword Search Tool.
The Open Clip Art Library is growing rapidly because of increasing submissions from artists. Currently, the top five artists in terms of the amount of clip art submitted are: Danny Allen (951 images), Nicu Buculei (456), Jose Hevia (453), Andy Fitzsimon (250), and Alan Horkan (119). These Artist's and others contributions are the life blood of the Library. While the critical unit of contribution in traditional Open Source is code, it is a little different with the Open Clip Art Library project in that an actual clip art donation is just as helpful as the code supporting it.
For March the Open Clip Art Library encourages submissions of clip art related to the concept of "Spring." In the coming months as the library grows in size, the project needs new developers to help build tools to process this growing repository. Upcoming planned features that the project needs assistance on include capturing and tracking of clip art requests, user account management, adding WebDAV support, and developing wizards to aid in composition.

Release 0.09 of the Open Clip Art Library is now available for download on the site as an individual package:
- http://www.openclipart.org/downloads/openclipart-0.09.zip
This new package is 20MB and contains 3104 unique user-submitted files, an increase from previous releases. The Open Clip Art Library is also browsable at www.openclipart.org where one might find specific clip art by searching through categories such as animals, education, transportation, or geography.
Thank you to everyone who sent encouraging e-mails while the Open Clip Art Library's hosting project, freedesktop.org, underwent necessary maintenance due to a server break-in. freedesktop.org now has a much stronger server management system in place and our services are now completely back on-line from the incident. This intermittent downtime caused our developers to consider mirroring strategies. If you have any server space available and would like to host a mirror, please e-mail our mailing list. In the end, these events bolster an open source project and make it much stronger.
To start the new year right, we decided to restart our montly release cycle, and begin to focus our attention to the project roadmap (http://openclipart.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Roadmap). For the upcoming 0.10 release, we encourage submission of Valentine's Day themed artwork, to help users with their love life. Behind the scenes, we will be integrating Bryce Harrington's Document Management System (DMS) to mediate the submissions we receive. DMS is a real breakthrough in document management, which is akin to source code management (CVS, SVN, etc), but for everyday practical group projects, versioning, and collaboration using various file formats.
Our core developers have also been discussing a few different sub-projects such as adding support to our services for Font submissions (http://openclipart.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Open_Font_Library) and also a way to auto-generate greeting cards (http://openclipart.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Greeting_Cards). Please add your comments to the aforementioned wiki pages and help us realize these ideas in the coming year!
If you are interested in this project, please join our mailing list (http://freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/clipart), check out the roadmap (http://openclipart.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Roadmap), and continue to submit your clip art! As the new year starts we are hoping to attract new developers and artists to work on the project. Happy New Year!

Open Clip Art Library Release 0.08 Announcement
Open Clip Art Library Release 0.08 Announcement
http://www.openclipart.org
Release 0.08 of the Open Clip Art Library is now available for download on the site as an individual package:
And, the library can also be 'browsed' at www.openclipart.org to find specific art by searching through categories such as animals, education, transportation, or geography.
The new final package is 16.7MB and contains 2181 unique user-submitted files. While this package is slightly smaller than the previous, it actually includes more unique images that each passed refined validation procedures. Each SVG file is checked to see if it contains 'metadata' that identifies title, author, keywords, and a license stating the work is released into the Public Domain. Perhaps the greatest contribution though to this "Flagship Release" is the incorporation of Sodipodi's International Flag Collection into the library.
- Browse flags immediately: http://www.openclipart.org/cgi-bin/navigate/geography/flags
- There are flags for many countries, US states, and other entities including some historical flags.
- Each flag svg file has embedded metadata describing the content.
- Flags are located under the geography category.
As the project progresses, so do the tools that are used to maintain and develop the project. Behind the scenes developers Bryce Harrington, Nathan Eady, Nicu Buculei, Alberto Simões, among others have been developing tools to allow for clip art to be submitted, parsed, and made metadata-rich easily. The project continues to its striving to make the submission process simple, but effective.
For the upcoming 0.09 release, we encourage submission of Christmas and New Year's themed artwork, to help users wishing to create works for the holidays.
As this is Open Clip Art Library's first widely announced public release, we hope and encourage you to submit your public domain vector graphics to the collection. Also, Open Clip Art Library is open to the addition of new librarians! The project needs people to help develop the website, write parsing tools, to validate submitted artwork, and to use the clip art to create new works.

Open Clip Art Library Release 0.06 Announcement
Release 0.06 of the Open Clip Art Library is now available for download on the site:
In this release, most clipart has been organized into categories based on its subject metadata. I've done some manual cleanup to fix duplicate categories (e.g. ocal_logos, logo, ocallogo, et al.) but didn't change the keywords themselves, so we'll need a better fix for next time.
I also used the sorted clipart that was generated for the browse tool, and programmatically added all the keywords to the images based on the directory names in their path.
The sorting capability's still quite rough - it doesn't do sub-nesting of categories, for example - but it marks an important step since last time we weren't able to sort at all! There's still plenty of room for improvement.
There is also considerably more clipart in this release than before. We've grown from 721 items in the 0.05 release to over 1700 unique images in this one, with a corresponding increase in the size of the package from 4.2M to over 12M.
