Discussion page?

I believe it would be good to have some discussion on the various sections and issues that come up. I have some strong opinions and I'm sure other people do too. Here's a good place to discuss the things, and the article proper could be what we have decided. This way we can go in-depth in discussion, as well keeping the actual goals/milestones clean and being aware of specific goals. If you think we can keep just the article and achieve the same purpose then by all means, copy and paste this page into the article, delete this page, and we can carry on from there. Otherwise we can discuss here and put the decided goals on the article.Chovynz 08:30, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

General

I think things need to be clear for new people straight away. On the current OCAL it is not easily navigated until you have some knowledge and experience and time with the site. On this new improved-to-be-developed version, things are much clearer (good job guys!), but there are still places that need some more attention.Chovynz

Error in CSS?

On the review page : http://summerstyle.net/openclipart.org/?ccm=/reviews/post/79 the text runs off the side of the screen in Mozilla Firefox 3.0. Please fix. Chovynz 01:07, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Javascript or Alternative text?

Mouse hover over the main buttons reveals strings

  • Name = current = suggested
  • News = str_news_page = Read News, keep up to date
  • Browse = str_browse_page = Look for clipart
  • Sets = Help hint for your tab = Compilations and favourites
  • Submit = str_submit_page = Manage, Remix and Upload
  • Request = str_sets_page = Want something specific? Ask in this place.
  • People = str_see_people = Read about the members!
  • Help Out = str_helpout_page = Need help? Go here!
  • About = str_about_page = About Open Clipart Library

Any plans to change these current hover messages to something a little more easier on the eyes? Please also note that "Sets" and "Request" hover messages are are incorrect and need fixing.Chovynz 00:41, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

It was a bug in ccHost, victor fixed it --Michaelkrnac 09:14, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Fixed on the new development version? or not yet implemented? It's still displaying the same "problems".Chovynz 19:38, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Requests

Should we really use ccHost to manage Requests? Because that mess up our database!

We could always go back to using the wiki for requests. It's a bit annoying (from a newcomers point of view) to have to signup and log into both, but it works. I don't currently like how the requests can easily be confused with normal clipart.Chovynz 08:33, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Maybe with new version of ccHost the problem would be eliminated --boobaloo 08:15, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Hopefully it will be fixed with new version like you say. I just tried using the current version of Requests with the public OCAL website. I think having a requirement to submit a file as well as a description, is a bit limiting and off-putting. Are we able to take that requirement for submitting a file off the new-development request page as well?I don't know how the New-version-of-Request works yet. I'll play around with it to see if it has a similar functionality.Chovynz 19:40, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Individual Clip Art

Taken from IRC chat: http://summerstyle.net/openclipart.org/?ccm=/files/chovynz/62 (-refering to issues automatically generated when a user uploads an outline version to the same clipart page as another clipart. More buttons are generated, things shift and move around on the clipart page.Chovynz 20:40, 13 April 2009 (UTC))

(michaelkrnac) and thats why I think a user should only can upload ONE SVG. I think every version should be ONE Clipart and should be linked as remix

(chovynz/nathanhelp) I'm not sure about one svg though. It will make Manage files quite messy (You are fighting against how things are done currently :D )

(michaelkrnac) Right. Because we use a new feature ... this playlist stuff ... user uploads svg, server generates png. When user has a outine version he uploads a remix. When the user is done he packs all icons into one compilation/playlist

General direction of thought: One upload = one clipart. If a user wants to upload an outline of a clipart, or part of a clipart pack, then the user "remixes", and uploads separately.

This is the logical structure for me. --Michaelkrnac 21:51, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

This is like it is done in the actual OCAL --Michaelkrnac 21:51, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

This is like it should be done in the new version. Because than every clipart has a thumbnail that is viewable.
I don`t know if ccHost makes a diffrence between derivate and remix. I have to ask Victor.

Browse Page

Download is not working without JavaScript

It is possible to click the thumbnail to view/download the image but it is not particularly obvious.

In the previous version the download buttons were available without JavaScript.

How about putting it as a Main Page?

I have a strong feeling that we should have some selection of cliparts right on the main page. Not some "news". I think that people come to this site looking for cliparts and they should see the cliparts when they enter. How do you think? Papapishu 09:07, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Maybe thumbnails for the the new Cliparts?--Michaelkrnac 15:25, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Single image page and reviews

  • very long reviews look strange (how could they be shortened? Maybe show just the first paragraph and then "more..." button?

Set Page

General

  • Viewing people's compilations : 'View All' does not currently work.Chovynz 08:30, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Thumbnails aren't currently working for the sets. (Geez. So many thumbnails needed (Browse, Big thumbnail, compilation thumbnails). We need that svg preview working!! :)Chovynz
Waht do you think of a previe like in the apple gallery? http://gallery.mac.com/emily_parker --Michaelkrnac 16:50, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Name change?

  • Should we call it "sets" ? or "compilation" or "album" or "list"???
I like "collection", but maybe it's too long. "Set" sounds good in "icon set", but for a group of clip arts I would say "clip art collection". Papapishu 17:33, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

  • New Icons (Oleg)
I like the mop and bucket and vacuum cleaner icon, but I think the arrows need re-working or replacing.Chovynz 19:52, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

What Categories do we need?

Is it about origin (original clip arts / external_source / remixes) or stage of completion (request / finished clip art / example of use)? What kinds of resources-that-are-clearly-not-clip-art do we wish to include (now we have Inkscape filters)? How about different categories based on form: clip art (=illustration), border and background (tileable pattern)? Papapishu 08:44, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

It works to Remix you self http://summerstyle.net/openclipart.org/?ccm=/files/michi/76 (Click remix in the detail view and than uncheck/check
the box in the remix field and than its possible to upload your remix)
So i think we need this Sections
  *Manage Files
  *Submit Original Clipart
  *Submit Remix
  *submit from ecternal source
  --Michaelkrnac 14:53, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Manage Your Files

(Michi: I think we do not need this. The user should manage everthing in the browse view).

I don't fully understand the comment, nor do I understand what Michi is referring to about the Browse view , but I think we absolutely do need the Manage Files. In the new version, it's in a different place than in 0.19, but it seems to work quite well, better in fact than the current setup. The only thing I would like to see added is a general link to the main Manage files of the logged in user, on each clipart page that belongs to the user, so that we don't need to go through the Submit Screen only, but that we can also access the manage files from every "owned" clipart. So in summary, I say leave the Manage files where they are, but also add general links from the owned clipart.Chovynz 08:30, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Submit Original Clip Art

Submit a Clip Art Remix

Submit Clip Art From An External Source?

(Michi: I think we do not need this too)

I disagree. It comes up quite alot from Wiki Commons and other sites. However, instead of having a separate submission section for it, we could use a generic submit, with a sources box added to the generic page.Chovynz 08:30, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Submit a Screenshot or Example ?

(Michi: I think that is useless too)

I agree. I don't see the point of this in the current site, nor in the next developed version. Can someone explain what it is for? Chovynz 08:33, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
In the beginning (I mean, about 2006) it was used mainly for screenshots. There were some nice examples of "how clip art can be used": in a poster, wbsite or card game. People also put there one-page tutorials like vectorization how-to and reducing image boundary (used on Guidelines page). But you're right, now it seems to serve as another trashbin, the same way as "Requests" sometimes do.
I think that one-page tutorials could be safely moved to the wiki, and grouped in the same category, and maybe also linked from one "Tutorials" page. I have no idea what to do with typical examples (screenshots). They may be useful as resources for press. I think it would be best to contact Gerald G. to ask his opinion, as he seems to have uploaded most examples (his userpage on OCAL and userpage on wiki). ::Another thing: sometimes I run into a new upload like this wedding invitation, which IMO isn't clip art, but an example of how clip art can be used. I think that such files are useful, but just don't fit in "clip art" section. "Examples" might be a good place for them. Papapishu 08:32, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Submit a Request?

(Michi: We have to rethink about the Request stuff i think we should skip it at the moment because there is no nice way cchost can handle it)

I agree, Requests need a rethink. I really don't like how they are included in the database at the moment. They need to be separate and not counted as clipart. It needs to be clear that these are "Requests" and not clipart - for the Admins sake and Joe Blogs who is browsing. On the current site it isn't all that clear either. As I said above, we could always go back to using the wiki page for requests. That seemed to work quite well.Chovynz 08:30, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
So we link the "Request" -Button in the navigation to a static page that illustrated what requests are.
And we add there a BIG Link to the new designed Request-Wiki page? --Michaelkrnac 15:35, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Submit a Self-Contained Project

What is this for? It's not clear to me.Chovynz 08:30, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

I think that is when project is complicated work with many forms and without samples from other peopleBoobaloo 11:20, 12 April 2009 (GMT+3)
