Join the Open Clip Art Library Community

The first way to help the Open Clip Art Library is to join the community.

This includes:

  • Participate in discussions
  • Help with what skills that you already have
  • Give feedback to the development teams and the artists
  • Create tools that make use of the Open Clip Art Library for all users
  • ...and spread the word about the Open Clip Art Library

The main ways to gather information from and interact with the Open Clip Art Library community are:

Create and submit new clipart

The best way to help is to create and submit new clipart.

All the images in The Open Clip Art Library (OCAL) are of the SVG(Scalable Vector Graphics) format. So the easiest place to start is to get a vector graphics editor like inkscape or one of the many other editors there are and start creating.

Guidelines are in place for the submission of artwork to the OCAL. Following these guidelines will ensure that your submissions enter the OCAL, and are available for use by everyone.

All images in the OCAL are in the public domain. This is the commons of information and expression where nothing is owned and all is permitted. You will just have to keep the name of the original author and others who have contributed.

Answer requests for clipart

A great way to help OCAL is to answer requests for people. Want to know how to start? Read here.

Cleanup existing clipart

There are a number of cliparts that need clean up of some description. Some of the clipart do not validate correctly. You could help OCAL by fixing these cliparts and re-uploading as a remix. Please make a comment about what you have done, so that when someone else comes to cleanup duplicates we can determine the most valid one.

We are in desperate need of people to help from PHP programmers. Contact us via the list or join us on #openclipart on freenode (irc.freenode.net). Areas that need work are: code to make PNG thumbnails of svg files as they are uploaded, bulk uploading, cchost bug fixing.

Some time after July 2006, the Open Clip Art Library migrated to Cchost, which is an open source project that provides web-based infrastructure to support collaboration, sharing, and storage of multi-media using the Creative Commons licenses and metadata. Source: Cchost

The Open Clip Art Library wiki page on the OCAL ccHost development is a good place to start to get information about the progress of the development of the new engine.
