Other Questions

  • Some signs remind me to a commercial clipart collection. I do not remember the origin, but are you sure that svg/signs_and_symbols/ChargesSuspendues.svg and the like are PD?
ChargesSuspendues.svg doesn't exist anymore on openclipart --Patricia.fidi 16:20, 11 Jul 2006 (PDT)
  • What is the best tool (if it exists) to convert svg to cdr or ai? I've found Inkscape but it only saves to ps or exports to png :(
Inkscape is supposed to be able to save to .ai if you have the right dependencies installed (pstoedit, and maybe other things). Alternatively, Adobe Illustrator CS should be able to do the conversion. You could try the 30-day trial version on the Adobe website.
You may find tools here about ill2svg and ai2svg.py--Patricia.fidi 16:20, 11 Jul 2006 (PDT)
  • I think that you can safely add these cliparts to Open CLip Art Library: AIGA - Symbol Signs. That page says that those files are "copyright-free", but I think you'd better inform them, if you really take those files and add them to Open Clip Art Library. Those files are in EPS-format, but I think it is trivial to convert them to SVG. -- [http:/iki.fi/juhtolv Juhapekka Tolvanen]
I converted these cliparts in SVG format and archive it in a single file. The uploaded file name is 'aiga_symbol_signs' and contain 122 cliparts. For information these cliparts are defined on the aiga.org site like that: "These copyright-free symbols have become the standard for off-the-shelf symbols in the catalogues of U.S. sign companies."
  • Can we integrate some cliparts that come from others GPL or LGPL projects ? Like SVG icons projects or Klipart.
No, because the Open Clip Art Library only accepts public domain clipart. Also, GPL and LGPL are inappropriate for clipart, as they require attribution.
  • At http://www.vv.se/templates/page3____2279.aspx there is a collection of Swedish road signs (in Adobe Illustrator (AI), TIFF (TIF) and Windows Metafile (WMF) formats) for download. If somebody could do a batch conversion of those it would be nice.
Already done. Just to go http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Road_signs_of_Sweden and get them!

Project Ideas

  • Open Swatch Book in collaboration with the Scribus project

Holiday Themed Releases

As a way to provide focus for each official release, the project could adopt a holiday approach, where each release is identified with a particular holiday. For example, the Father's Day release could focus on clipart such as sports, fishing, cars, etc. The idea is that this would provide open source users with fresh clipart for use in any materials they may wish to create for that event (greeting cards, flyers, posters, website collateral, etc.) It also gives the clipart team a goal to shoot for with a sensible target date to deliver by.

Further, an interesting extension of this idea would be to also include some templates for things that people might wish to use the clipart in. For example, Mother's Day could include a Scribus template for making a Mother's Day card, while Father's Day could include an SVG roadmap in Inkscape for a weekend fishing trip, and New Year's Day could include an Impress presentation for creating a photo album of one's social events from the past year. In addition to providing users with something directly useful, it helps us both promote and tie-in with other Open Source projects. By featuring a different app each release, we encourage exposure of a wider range of apps to users than they might normally encounter, and at the same time emphesizes the usefulness of the clipart project's effort for that application's userbase.

We would need to take into account that some nations celebrate holidays at different times, and plan release dates accordingly (e.g., time the Father's Day release so it'll hit the most instances worldwide within a reasonable period of time). It would probably be sensible to provide 2-4 week's lead time between the release and the actual holiday so that folks will have time to actually use the material.
